Easy sangrias to keep you cool all summer long.

Whether you’re hosting a party or lounging in the backyard, you’ll need a pitcher of something refreshing. Make red, white or both – either way, it’s super easy!

Mix it Up
Stir together 3 cups Sensations by Compliments Pomegranate Italian Soda (for red) or Clementine Soda (for white), 3 cups chilled wine (dry red or white), 3 to 4 cups fruit and a handful of fresh herbs. Add ice just before serving.

Make it Fruity
For red sangria, we love blackberries, plums, oranges and mint (and even a dash of cinnamon to make it authentic). For white, try peaches, honeydew melon, lemon and basil. For more developed flavour, let the fruit steep in wine for 1 to 4 hours before adding soda, fresh herbs and ice.

Give it Time
For more developed flavour, let the fruit steep in wine for 1 to 4 hours before adding soda, fresh herbs and ice.

Our Sensations by Compliments Italian Sodas are made from hand-harvested fruit. We use a cold-pressing technique so each bottle bursts with fresh flavours, like Pomegranate, Clementine, Sicilian Lemon, Blood Orange, and Pink Grapefruit – perfect in cocktails of simply served over ice.

So, you’ve been invited up to your friend’s cottage for the long weekend.

So, you’ve been invited up to your friend’s cottage for the long weekend. Sun, swimming, and sipping cocktails on the deck at sunset: it sounds pretty sweet! If you show them how grateful you are, you might just get asked back again soon.

Be invited. Don’t just pop in on your friends because you happen to be taking a Sunday drive near their cottage. They are up there to get away from everything, and that includes hosting unless they feel like it.

Be prepared. Ask your hosts if you need to bring anything along with you. If you’ve got room, it’s a good idea to bring extra towels, bedding, pillows, bug spray and sunscreen. Think about bringing extra coolers and folding chairs if you’ve got a big crowd. If you have any dietary restrictions, bring your own food just in case.

Be realistic. Don’t assume you’ll be able to use Wi-Fi or have cell service – they may not even have a working shower. Take a cue from them and skip checking work emails this weekend.

Pitch in and help out. Even if your hosts insist on taking care of everything, don’t mistake their cottage for a B&B. Offer to do the dishes or clean up at the end of the day (you might need to insist, very gently). You want them to be able to relax, too.

Bring a gift. You can bring something simple, like a bottle of wine, or something practical, like spices they can use for the BBQ. Or you could make a meal for everyone – breakfast is especially thoughtful because it lets your hosts sleep in.

Go with the flow. If folks are having a sing-along around the campfire, don’t stay inside reading a book – go join in! Don’t worry if your plans for the day go awry; that can be one of the most fun, freeing things about cottage life.

Who says grilling is only meant for the weekends? These triple-tested recipes will take your summer weeknights to a tasty place in no time – and at around $3 per serving, they offer amazing value.

Monday: Our Crusted Grilled Chicken Drumsticks are crunchy, delicious perfection that even the youngest family members will enjoy.
Make way for an exciting crop of early arrivals including greenhouse-grown crisp and refreshing cucumbers.

It’s time to cheer for the first crop of early summer vegetables! To find local Canadian produce in May, look for green-house grown varieties, available long before those from the field. We shine a spotlight on humble but versatile cucumber, which stars in our Spicy Cucumber Relish recipe.

May is a month of early, plentiful bounty at Sobeys! We are always hard at work sourcing local gems at the peak of freshness. In May, you can enjoy field greens such as arugula, herbs and Swiss chard, along with greenhouse-grown cucumbers, tomatoes and mushrooms.

Spotlight on cucumber! There’s a reason the expression cool as a cucumber exists: this refresher is clean and delivers a satisfying crunch. Its thin skin also contains beneficial nutrients like fibre and Vitamin C.

Cucumbers add subtle fresh flavour and unexpected texture to summer salads, sauces, sandwiches, sliders and cocktails. Try them in these speedy recipes:

Why choose greenhouse-grown? Thanks to our hard-working greenhouse growers, you can enjoy crisp cucumbers and juicy, vine-ripened tomatoes in early summer. Environmentally controlled greenhouses ensure each veggie grows to tasty perfection. And with bumblebees and ladybugs pollinating the plants and fighting off “bad bugs,” there’s less need for pesticides – making it better for both you and the environment. Look for all of our greenhouse-grown vegetables this season at your local Sobeys.

Pack a picnic and take it to go! We’re celebrating our first official summer holiday, Victoria Day! Make-ahead super-stuffed sandwiches, hearty slaw and a layered salad are all featured on this staycation menu, plus tips for a more budget-friendly picnic.

We help you celebrate the arrival of the first summer long weekend with three tested-until-perfect recipes. These really are ideal picnic recipes – they are more delicious when made ahead, keep well for several hours, and are easy to pack and serve family-style or in make-ahead portions.

Look no further for a fresh, practical menu that will make your outdoor Victoria Day getaway shine. This picnic will satisfy both the salad and sandwich-lovers in your life.

Our Cherry, Apple & Broccoli Slaw with Pine Nuts is a fresh, new twist on the go-to cabbage-based classic: *Prep tip: Use pre-chopped, pre-washed Compliments Broccoli Slaw for no-fuss salads that keep better than their leafy green counterparts.

Our super-stuffed Roasted Chicken & Sweet Pepper Sandwiches hold together so famously they’re perfect for excursion eating: *Prep tip: Assemble these individually wrapped sandwiches the night before—the ingredients and flavours meld together for more taste, less mess and no wasted daylight!

Our Layered Corn, Black Bean & Rice Salad is a colourful display with bright flavours to match. *Prep tip: Put this simple salad together in the morning – the dressing is only on the corn and rice so the other veggies will stay crisp until lunch.

Need some tips to make your outdoor feast even more affordable and fun? Life’s a picnic with these easy ways to save on your next staycation outing:

Pack it up: Freeze cartons or bottles of juice the night before to keep food cold – and then they become slushy drinks to accompany your perfectly chilled food.

Spread it out: Whether you use a blanket or a bright tablecloth, create a barrier between the damp grass and you by putting down a tarp or a few plastic garbage bags first (and then use them for easy cleanup).

Waste not: Instead of throwing your money away (literally) with disposable dishware, pick up a set of our Compliments Summer Acrylics – they’re cheery, versatile and dishwasher-safe. Reusable cloth napkins are also perfect for wrapping dishware and cushioning containers for travel.

Think big: Juice boxes and individual snacks may seem like a good idea, but bringing along bottles of lemonade and multi-serve side dishes and snacks is asimple way to save.
