Do You Know Where Your Food Comes From?

Tammi’s Traceable Seafood discovery

When I ask my kids where their food comes from they reply, “The grocery store!” Sure, that’s true, but WHERE does it come from originally? Isn’t that something that you’d like to know?

When I first heard about Sobeys Traceable Seafood program, I thought, “BRILLIANT!” Customers can now trace a variety of fresh seafood products and frozen Sensations by Compliments seafood, right to its original source, meaning right back to the fisherman who caught it, the boat it was caught from, the fishing area where the catch took place and the fishing method used. Again—brilliant!

Why is this important to me?

It’s all about informed choices and knowledge. If we are what we eat, and what goes into my mouth is important, then it’s important to know where my food comes from. Tracing your fish is easy—all you have to do is enter the unique code found on the back of the product packaging (with your smartphone or computer) at www.thisfish.info.

When you do, the site will show you where the fish was caught, and also what fishing method was used to catch it, and where it was processed. Want detailed info right from the fisherman? It’s there too, including a bio, photos, other catches and even a diary-style logbook. It’s actually really neat information to read through.

Now that we know where our seafood comes from, who better than my salmon-loving daughters to send a note to the fisherman who caught our salmon? (Yes, you can do that, too!)

Here’s what she wrote:

Hi! It was yummy. Thank you, Isabelle

Kids! Short and sweet, but true. Dinner was delicious!

And until November 21, 2012, you can also use that code to enter to win Sobeys gift cards!

Oh, wait, how did we prepare our salmon? Easy and simple, so you can taste the fish—that’s how we like it. A little butter, some pepper and bake until you can flake it with a fork. It’s always a hit with our family. Cheers to a great meal and knowing where it came from!
